2004 - 2005CIS/2 IFC HarmonizationTop

DescriptionThe project is funded by American Institute of Steel Construction. The goal of the project is to coordinate information flow between the sub-contractual lavel structural steel domain vertically to the main-contractual level domain. The project aims to enable CIS/2 (CIMSteel 2.0 LPM6) compliant applications to exchange information with the IFC (Industrial Foundation Classes) compliant applications that used essentially by architects and general contractors. In this project, we adopt a Used Case scenario that articulates possibly information flow between two domains and define the exchangeable information sets between IFC and CIS/2. An IFC-to-CIS/2 or versa verse translators are implemented according to the proposed Used Case, translators will be used as shareware and freely available to vendors for both CIS/2 and IFC compliant applications.
Personal ContributionMy personal contributions in this project are 1) define translatable information set for Use Case 1 and Use Case 2 and 2) implement the UC1 and UC2 translators. UC1 describes the exchangeable information for structural analysis information and UC2 describes the exchangeable information of an IFC architectural preliminary design model to the CIS/2 structural steel design model. Translators are developed in C++ with deploying an API from ST-Developer. The project is a one year project.

DescriptionThe initial goal of the project is to develop a CIS/2 translator for CATIA. So CATIA system can export structural steel data to downstream applications (e.g. steel detailing and FEA applications). It is considered as a part of the AISC (American Institute of Construction Steel) interoperable development efforts. The project is funded by AISC. The Second phase of this project is a continuously development on the previous work. The project will be supported by Gehry¡¦s Technology. The provision of this project is to increase the interoperability of the new architectural interface, developed by Gehry¡¦s Technology, an architectural design interface for preliminary and structural design of buildings. The task includes completing the analytical and manufacturing translators of CIS/2. Advanced data management conformance (DMC) is also considered to be implemented in the next phase. The project is currently under a contractual cooperation between Georgia Tech and Gehry¡¦s Technology
Personal ContributionI am in charge of the entire project including development and exploration of data mapping. The task requires having experience on existing STEP toolkits (e.g. ST-Developer ROSE or EDM SDAI), knowledge in the product model (e.g. CIS/2) and brief understanding on the CATIA COM API.

2002 - 2004FabTrol CIS/2 Relational DBTop
Positiongraduate Research Assistant
Affiliation Georgia Institute of Technology
DescriptionThe project was funded by FabTrol System Inc. , a software vendor who develops Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system for steel fabrication and management. The FabTrol system is a commercial system built on a relational database, which is Microsoft FoxPro in FabTrol. In order to interface with applications that support CIS/2, especially steel detailing applications such as SDS/2 from Design Data and Xsteel from Tekla, FabTrol system needs to retrieve data from CIS/2 model file and read it into the internal relational database. The team at Georgia Tech, led by Professor Eastman, developed a CIS/2 to SQL translator that can read and write any EXPRESS defined schema, populate P21 file into the database [You, S. at el 2002] and export data to P21 file [Yang, D 2002]. The system has been taken over by FabTrol and will be commercial in FabTrol¡¦s future release.
Personal ContributionDefine the mapping between CIS/2 data and FabTrol Management Information System (MIS) data. The task requires knowledge on the CIS/2 model as well on the MIS data specification. The mapping is written in SQL stored procedure and views. The work is to be commercial by FabTrol System Inc. in their future release.

DescriptionThe project has been funded by AISC and led by Prof. Eastman since 2000. CIS/2 was adopted by AISC as the standard data model for their new EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) effort. There are over 12 software vendors who support data exchange through CIS/2.
Personal ContributionMy personal contribution includes advising and resolving technical issues for software vendors. Detail tasks include outlining the specification of mapping CIS/2 data to manufacturing information system (MIS), validating vendor¡¦s test cases, summarizing best-practice issues and proposing issues for future Logic Product Model (LPM) revision.
